Chapter 7

"Well, now I know how Alice felt in Wonderland."

Finn stood at the base of the stairs facing the main room with Cas beside him. The tables that had been set around the room before were now folded up against the walls and stored under the windows. Filling the center of the room were about fifty elevated metal stands holding a pair of dog dishes lined up in rows across the entire floor.

Finn stared. Are they eating kibble? No, it smelled like sausage and gravy. And a gray do--wolf over there might've eaten a piece of toast.

A few canines nearest Finn and Cas looked over and--if panting and wagging equaled smiling--they seemed happy to see them.

"'Morning," Finn said because they were people a little while ago. He'd have to remember not to treat them like dogs. It might be...offensive? Finn chuckled and wiped a hand down his face. He scratched at his beard and had absolutely no idea what to do here.

Cas leaned into his leg and quietly whined. Finn touched Cas's head, smoothing his fur down toward his perky ear. Okay, it was easier to wrap his mind around all this when he was looking at and touching Cas. Because he'd seen it happen? Because this was still Cas? Whatever it was, Finn felt eased by him.

"So...you want some breakfast?"

Cas nodded, then looked across the room. Finn followed his gaze and saw Rick carrying a large pot toward a table that, yep, had stacks of toast, butter dishes, and pitchers of water. Cas took a couple steps in that direction, then looked back up at Finn. He nodded and walked behind him as they headed over.

"Hey, Finn." Rick looked him over. "Nice to see you. Again."

Finn smiled. "Yeah-yeah."

"'Morning, Cas. They're in Harkin's cabin. And they're expecting you."

Cas gulped, the whites of his eyes visible, but then he nodded.

"Are you in trouble?" Finn asked Cas. "Because of me?"

"I doubt it," Rick answered. "But Harkin's the alpha of the pack, and Alpha Lupescu is the equivalent of royalty, so they want a word with both of you. Literally."

"They aren't wolves?"

Rick huffed a laugh. "Oh, they are. But you'll have to see it to believe it."

Cas nudged Finn's thigh in a c'mon let's go gesture, so Finn saved his questions about how there could be something weirder than seeing a man turn into a wolf and followed Cas outside.

As Finn looked about at the cabins, he realized why he'd been instructed to build only pocket doors. So wolves could open and close them. He'd thought the handles they'd requested down low on both sides were for the kids, but no, they were for biting instead of holding.

And who worried about safety when most of them were their own guard dog?

Harkin's cabin, the one in the back of the clearing, had its door pushed almost completely open. When they arrived on the stoop, Finn looked in and saw a large black wolf with one white front foot, a gangly-looking, small brown wolf, and another wolf whose coat was a mix of black and white that almost looked gray.
